Mobile GIS FAQ
Project status, offline work, privacy and how the Android app relates to the web panel.
01 What is the Campo Aplicado mobile GIS? +
It is a GIS app for Android built for the work of agricultural advisers and technical teams.
It brings mapping, observations, photographs and agronomic calculations together in the same project.
02 When will it be ready? +
It is still in development, but much of it is already built and being tested. A beta version will not be long.
03 Does it work on phones or only on tablets? +
Both. The interface is designed for both screen sizes.
A tablet is more comfortable for GIS work, but it is not required: on a smartphone the app is fully functional.
04 Does it work on Apple iOS? +
No, although it can be brought to iOS. Without a device to test on, the code cannot be adapted, checked or built for it.
If you would like to use it on iOS and have an iPhone you no longer use, you can get in touch through the contact page. With it I will be able to adapt and test the app.
05 Can it be used without coverage? +
Yes. Projects and data prepared for the field remain available offline.
Queries to external services and downloading new information need a connection.
06 Does it cost anything or show ads? +
The app is planned as free to use and without advertising. Its features are not split into paid tiers.
07 What happens to the organisation's data? +
The data stays under the organisation's control. The app includes no analytics, advertising profiles or usage telemetry.
08 How does the web panel relate to the app? +
The organisation prepares and distributes projects from the panel. The adviser views, records and works with them on the Android device.
09 Does it include SIGPAC and other official sources? +
Yes. It integrates SIGPAC plots (the Spanish agricultural land parcel register), including the Canary Islands, as well as official mapping and services used in agricultural work.
10 What does it mean that Sentinel is integrated? +
The app includes almost all of the Sentinel Hub configuration. It has nothing to do with the plugins available for other GIS: it is a full integration.
With your API token you can use any layer, configuration or evalscript you have in Sentinel Hub, and choose the whole configuration live.
The added controls make the free quota last a long time, and the device adds local processing options that Sentinel Hub does not offer.
11 Can projects be used in QGIS? +
Yes. Your own projects can be created and edited on the phone and carried on in QGIS when needed.
12 How are field photographs organised? +
Photographs are stored georeferenced and linked to the plot, the crop and the visit.
13 Does it replace a technician's judgement? +
No. It organises information and runs calculations to support the work. Interpretation and decisions remain with the professional.
14 Aren't there similar apps already? +
No. There are SIGPAC viewers that let you add notes and lightweight JavaScript viewers, which are the most widely used, but their processing power and advanced features are limited.
This is a GIS with the full engine: more layers, more detail and more customisation, fast and, if you want, offline.
Projects can be prepared elsewhere and loaded onto the device, created on the device itself, or taken out, have their settings edited and loaded back in.
15 Is it the same GIS as the map viewer on this website? +
No. The mobile GIS is a standalone Android app designed to work offline.
The website GIS is built into the site's data and tools. Both share the same technical approach but cover different workflows.
