Is this for me?
If several items in the first list describe you, the tools and technical criteria here will probably be useful.
If this sounds like you
It may suit you if several of these situations apply:
You work as an agricultural technician, adviser, grower or farm manager.
You need to turn field data into specific management decisions, and to have something to stand on.
You wonder where the technicians who work in the field and build applications are. I can tell you now, there are fewer of them than there are Iberian lynxes.
You do things because they are useful, not for show.
You are tired of companies offering your business the super-mega app or the super-mega service, when what they sell is designed and built for growers' money, not for advisers.
You are looking for tools for irrigation, nutrition, climate, trials, GIS or records.
You value things for what they are and not for business labels: no 5.0, no AI, no big data. Tools have to be useful whatever they use inside, and the product on its own is not enough.
You want to run many calculations and understand the criteria behind the result.
Unlike the legislators, you know the field logbooks are going to be filled in by the technicians, like it or not.
You would rather the grower did not take you for one more of the same when you turn up on the farm.
Using less and using it better is more profitable and, in many cases, more sustainable.
You want to cut repetitive work without losing technical control.
You prefer resources born of real farm problems and tested in daily work.
You know that a lot of published data needs its context, and comes with more disclaimers to weigh up than a microloan contract.
You know that learning takes effort, and there is no better way than with advanced things. If there is something you know nothing about, there is still room to get better.
Engineering work goes hand in hand with profitability; without that variable, many decisions make no sense.
It is not for you
It is probably not the right destination if you are looking for:
An automatic answer that replaces professional judgement.
You have a master's in eyeballing it and a PhD in earning the same without doing any of this.
The only field you have seen is the one on the asparagus tin.
Organic is only because it pays more.
You think real situations are learnt from general textbooks. Wait until you see the impossible contraptions on some farms.
'I can do this myself with my Claude Max and my Codex Pro.' Go ahead. We have been waiting three years, with a thousand startups, and not one of them has got it right yet. There will be a reason.
You still think a supply technician is going to get out of all this. When the grower who takes the serious money out tells your boss 'I need this and they will not do it for me', we will talk.
You think a technician needs to know nothing about paperwork or technology, that boots, a notebook and a straw hat will see you through.
Commercial technical service is technical because somebody holds a technician's certificate. Oh dear. Bad news for you.
You think Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and company are going to answer management questions properly. If I got a penny every time a grower tells me 'I asked Claude...', I would still be poor, but with a fistful of pennies and badly managed crops.
An application you can use straight away that needs no technical concept learnt. Quite the opposite: a tool that needs no knowledge is not one worth having.
Unlimited access to everything on the server. This complements my work: the companies that hire me get my work + knowledge + whole tools. A bargain.
You think one product is the same as another, even if a label says so.
A commercial service with permanent support. Again, this exists because it complements, improves and eases professional work, mine and my colleagues'.
The economic and environmental costs of decisions do not worry you, because that is somebody else's business.
